Belgian Snowboarding & Freestyle Ski Championships 2008 — Snowjam

The Belgian Snowboarding & Freestyle Ski Championships 2008 were deliberately reinvented under the name Snowjam. The aim was clear from the start: a festival in the mountains, going beyond a conventional sporting competition. An event bringing elite sport, youth culture and experience together in one national winter sports gathering.

Snowjam served as an official championship and a cultural platform where snowboarding, freestyle skiing, music and a sense of community reinforced each other. The event was also intended to become a meeting ground for brands and innovations, where new and established players could connect with a young, engaged audience for the first time — through experience and participation rather than conventional sponsorship.

As a co-owner of the event — I bought the rights together with two friends — Snowjam was my first independent entrepreneurial venture. I was closely involved in the entire organisation and supporting activities: from attracting sponsors and managing partner relationships to audience experience, communication, event design and the complete experience on and off the slopes.

The championship demonstrated how sporting events can become broader meeting places, where engagement, identity and participation matter as much as sporting achievement. From a marketing perspective, Snowjam 2008 is an early example of experience-based branding: a setting where sport, brand experience and collective experience come together to create a lasting impact on athletes, visitors and partners.

These impressions illustrate how events, community dynamics and brand experience can reinforce one another — a theme that later returns in BrandQs projects involving participation, activation and social engagement.

Snowjam had Q8 and later Samsung as its main sponsor and served as an inspiration for later initiatives, including the winter edition of Tomorrowland at the same location.
